What is community engagement?
Texas State University is inspired by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education definition of community engagement. Our own definition is as follows:
Community engagement describes collaboration between TXST and its varied communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity. Community engagement occurs through activities related to teaching, scholarship, and service in partnerships among administration, faculty, staff, and students at TXST and the community. The goal of such partnerships is development of new knowledge and understanding through scholarship and creative activities; to enhance teaching and learning experiences through experiential community-based application of course- and discipline-based content; and to provide service that enhances community outcomes while strengthening individuals’ other-focused understanding and motives and contributing to the public good.
